In the old days of American theater, the 1950s and before, even megastars like Ethel Merman did not regularly get standing ovations. Standing ovations meant a performance was truly extraordinary. Some have attributed the trend to the tourists who fill many of the seats at Broadway shows; they may be less familiar with theater and therefore especially enthusiastic. But standing ovations are the default even at shows and plays that attract few tourists, and besides, tourists have been flocking to New York since long before the 1990s. I think that made theater, by contrast, feel more special — “live performance,” as we now refer to it.

Christopher Nolan didn't just get Oscar gold for "Oppenheimer," he also made a whole lot of green. "Oppenheimer" — which took home seven Academy Awards this weekend, including Best Picture — earned more than $950 million at the global box office, buoyed in part by its 70-millimeter IMAX release. Nolan's earnings were boosted by box office escalators as well as bonuses for winning both Best Director and Best Picture, according to the report. Reports of Nolan's payday arrived on the heels of a Forbes report that Margot Robbie took home $78 million in gross earnings thanks largely to the massive success of "Barbie", which raked in nearly $1.5 billion at the box office. New York CNN —“Madame Web” swung to No. In November, “The Marvels” saw a lackluster $47 million in domestic sales its opening weekend, and DC’s “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” opened in December to a feeble $27.6 million. It’s still too soon to estimate gross domestic sales for “Madame Web,” but, by the time it exited theaters, “Morbius” had made just $73 million. But “Madame Web,” which released February 14, struggled to gain upward momentum even along its six-day opening, which straddled two holidays: Valentine’s Day and Presidents’ Day. Recent months have seen musical box office hits like “Wonka,” “Mean Girls,” and successful concert films from both Beyonce and Taylor Swift.

Is Earlier Better for Theater Start Times?

At 6:30 p.m. on a recent Thursday, most London theatergoers were still busy at work, or eating a preshow dinner, or maybe waiting at home for a babysitter. Except at the National Theater. The early performances were “marginally outselling” other midweek shows, said Alex Bayley, the National Theater’s head of marketing. The theater will wait to see the trial results before making the early starts a permanent fixture. In interviews in the bustling foyer before the show, 20 attendees said that they thought the early start was a good idea.

When hundreds of playgoers lined up outside Wyndham’s Theater in London this week, the mood was excited. West End prices, Hooper said, were “out of control.”Another audience member, George Butler, 28, said that he was overjoyed to have secured two tickets for 20 pounds, or about $24, each, even if they were in the nosebleeds. “Theater is becoming very elitist,” Butler said. “The minute there’s a well known person in a play, it’s unaffordable.”London’s theater world is increasingly simmering with complaints over soaring ticket prices, and a perception that they are creeping closer to Broadway levels. Even as producers insist that a fraction of tickets must be sold at steep prices to offset cheap seats for low earners, concern is growing that a night at the theater is becoming an unaffordable luxury.

The Eras Tour film opened last weekend in movie theaters around the world. Shane, a theater worker, said crowds were well-behaved but the movie was so loud it blew out two amps. Swift's Eras Tour film is already record-smashing, bringing in between $95 and $97 million and marking the biggest-ever opening of a concert film — and is now in the running to potentially have the strongest-ever October debut. After an Eras Tour screening, "you don't really find anything too awful." Broadly, he wants Eras Tour theatergoers to know that even if they've purchased tickets online, they'll still need to be scanned.

Rep. Lauren Boebert was escorted out of a performance of "Beetlejuice" in Denver over the weekend. Surveillance footage shows her giving the middle finger to an usher as she leaves the venue. An incident report said she was kicked out after vaping, recording on her phone, and being loud. The footage, released by Denver Arts & Venues, a city and council agency responsible for running some of the state's venues, and later published by 9NEWS Denver, shows Boebert being removed from her seat. It then shows Boebert leaving the venue, flanked by ushers.

Despite its ubiquity, the play has had only one other Off Broadway production since its premiere — in 2004, starring Adam Rothenberg and Rosemarie DeWitt — and there has never been a Broadway production. “I think a lot of plays have failed on Broadway because they were really meant to be Off Broadway,” said Rockwell, who is working on the show with his producing partner Mark Berger. It’s about two damaged, shame-ridden people trying to find a way out of their own misery. “There are all different kinds of love stories, and this is just one of them,” Plaza said. “And I don’t like the idea that every piece of art that’s out there has to have some kind of social commentary or political message.

Envisioned two decades ago to add vibrancy and draw people to a place of devastation and mourning, the Perelman Performing Arts Center is finally arriving at a very different ground zero. Still, organizers believe the arts space, also called “PAC NYC,” has an important role to play in one of the most sensitive, historic spaces in the United States. “The performing arts center is kind of an amenity for a luxury neighborhood that they built,” said Todd Fine, who runs a advocacy business for historical preservation in lower Manhattan. Early on, the arts center was to house three established groups — two theaters and a visual arts museum — plus a new museum celebrating freedom. Then he came to see it as a step forward for the trade center and on a personal level, an embrace of living life fully.

In London, theatergoers have flocked to “Dear England,” a hit play that chronicles the drama and anguish of the men’s national soccer team in its long quest for another World Cup title, now at 57 years and counting. In Sydney on Sunday, the England women’s team might finally get the job done. England will face off against Spain in the Women’s World Cup final, the first for either team. While they are closely matched, England’s impressive march through the tournament has spurred hopes that “football’s coming home,” in the ever-optimistic words of “The Three Lions,” the unofficial anthem of the men’s team. If anything, it makes them look even less formidable and more culpable, if women do the job.”

Yet what we consider theatrical minimalism today used to be standard: Greek tragedies barely had sets; the major visual element in Elizabethan theater was the performance space itself. This changed in the latter half of the 17th century as indoor staging became the norm. As lighting technology improved over the next 200 years, among other aspects, productions grew increasingly ornate and complex. Throughout the 20th century, many attempted to bring minimalism back: Orson Welles and John Houseman thrilled audiences with a scenery-free “Dr. “There’s no visual noise to take your eye off what you’re meant to be focusing on,” Gilmour says of her recent production.

Broadway producers and industry leaders say that the annual awards show is a vital marketing tool for the industry, and particularly important to the financial health of new musicals. members are striking for better compensation and structural changes to the way writers relate to studios, streaming services and networks as the entertainment industry evolves. Conversations between theater industry leaders, union leaders, and CBS are ongoing. The Broadway League and the American Theater Wing, which jointly present the Tony Awards, are hoping to resolve the crisis soon. If a broadcast proves impossible, many industry leaders appear determined to hand out the prizes as scheduled, either at a nontelevised event or simply by announcing the winners.
